Taiping’s rustic delight

The best food are sometimes found in the most unexpected and remote of places. Restoran Azrorasa which looks like an unassuming shed next to Sungai Jaha, amidst village houses and oil palm plantations in Matang Gelugor near Taiping, is one example.

Its ‘‘sembilang fish head curry and fried sembilang fish’’ are absolutely delicious.

And its chilli nipah crab are, well, worth dirtying your fingers for. It’s a three-word verdict: Simple and good!

Finger food: Chilli nipah crab, the restaurant's signature dish.

Owner Rohayah Osman, 42, who has been running the restaurant for the last four years, gets her supply of the sea-variant catfish and mud crab from village folks nearby.

“Customers usually have to call an hour before coming to give us time to get the fish and crab,” she said.

As the seafood is cooked in just under an hour after being caught, the natural sweetness of the meat is retained and this method, Rohayah said, also enhances the flavour of the dish.

According to Rohayah, a lot of non-local residents patronise her restaurant.

Among those who have eaten here include Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam and Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Noh Omar.

“They were here during the recent Bukit Gantang by-election,” she declared proudly.

Restoran Azrorasa is located about 5km from the junction in front of the Matang Museum on Jalan Matang and opens daily from noon to 10pm.
