What is Palliative Medicine?
Palliative medicine is the treatment and care of patients diagnosed with life-threatening conditions, such as cancer, AIDS etc, and is now accepted as a medical specialty. It is Hospis Malaysia’s mission to ensure that every Malaysian is aware of and has access to proper palliative care when the need arises.
Hospis Malaysia now cares for over 1,000 patients a year, and has cared for more than 12,000 patients since its inception in 1991.
What Services are Offered?
Hospis Malaysia’s services and facilities are offered free-of-charge to enhance the quality of life of patients by assessing their medical, psychological and emotional conditions and treating them accordingly. Medication (if necessary) is administered at no cost and under proper supervision. Psychological and emotional assistance are also extended to family members.
In the discharge of palliative care, Hospis Malaysia offers:
i) A homecare program – where doctors and nurses take turn to be on call 24 hours a day to administer palliative medicine and care at the homes of patients;
ii) A day care centre for patients’ use, which is run by Hospis Malaysia doctors, nurses and volunteers. The day care centre is used by patients to learn, socialise, reflect and seek solace. All services in relation to the day care centre which include provision of food, transport and therapy, are offered free-of-charge. The daycare centre is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
iii) Loan of medical equipment, beds and wheelchairs, when available.
How is Hospis Malaysia Funded?
Hospis Malaysia is funded by the kind donations and contributions of the generous public and corporate sector. Each year, approximately RM1.6 million is required to fund our operational activities, which include medical equipment, training costs and salaries of its employees. Volunteers and council members are not remunerated.
