Merdeka @ 49

WE have been independent for 49 years. Young by some standards, but old, and more importantly, wise enough to realise that as an independent state, we've still got an exciting journey ahead of us.

The journey thus far has been more than eventful too. We took our baby steps as a free nation in 1957, suffered through the necessary teething problems - the Confrontation with Indonesia, Singapore's withdrawal, etc - but as soon as we stood up and learned to walk, we took every step with purpose and determination.

As a consequence, we saw the kind of progress that was the envy of many a nation. From building a multiracial and multireligious society that lives in relative peace and harmony, to constructing the world's tallest twin buildings, our achievements have been nothing short of phenomenal.

And still we journey onward, hoping to leave a lasting impression in this world, as one people, as a proud nation.

To commemorate Malaysia's 49th year as an independent state, The Star Online/AllMalaysia.info has set up this little site you see before you, called Merdeka @ 49. It's our way to allow you to raise your cups in an online toast to this land we call our very own, this land we call home.

Here's a guide to find your way in Merdeka @ 49:
Chronology briefly chronicles how Malaysia achieved the status of a sovereign nation, highlighting pivotal dates in its history. Then and Now looks back at the days before Merdeka and how much has changed - or remained the same - since then.
Stories is where we collect all relevant Merdeka-related articles that have appeared in The Star newspaper. Merdeka Happenings is the place to start if you want to know what events are lined up to commemorate the 49th Merdeka Day.
Independent Reads provides a listing of books about Malaysia. You know, to encourage the growth of a reading society. ;-) Trivia collects some interesting - and amusing - facts about Malaysia, with regard to Independence.
The Challenge Take this 15-question fun quiz to "measure" just how much of a Malaysian you really are. Then spread it around. Remember, it's just for fun. Capturing Merdeka Contest is a photography-cum-caption contest, open to all proud Malaysians who can point and click a camera. Great - and we really mean great - prizes!
Photo Gallery is exactly what it says. Includes the Pix of Yesteryear album, a collection of photos of old that immortalise historic moments. Tell Your Story Got stories to tell? Do it here.
