When you think about a city in Malaysia, what comes to mind? Naturally, the busiest and most popular city, Kuala Lumpur, which is also the capital of Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur (KL), which is also known as the “Garden City of Lights”, has much to offer the traveller and it ranges from its various heritage buildings and monuments to its gardens and parks. Shopping havens can also be found in Chinatown, Little India, Central Market, local bazaars and the many luxurious shopping malls.
But KL is not the only city worth visiting, as holidaymakers will definitely enjoy discovering the historic city of Malacca – a place where you can find antiques on Jonker Street and watch cultural performances at the Portuguese Square.
You can also explore Malacca’s historical sites such as the remains of the Portuguese fortress A Famosa, the chili-red Christ Church and the Stadhuys, a testament to the architectural ingenuity of one-time colonial rulers, the Dutch.
George Town (Penang) is another charming city to visit as it offers holidaymakers a mix of good food and history. You can end a great day spent visiting the Cathedrals, temples, and bazaars by sampling the many scrumptious local delicacies.
There’s also Kuching (Sarawak) – which means “cat” in Bahasa Malaysia – a modern city that has not lost its old world charm. The main attraction is the Waterfront, a beautifully landscaped esplanade where people gather to watch the sun setting over distant Gunung Matang.
Meanwhile, if you happen to visit Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) you might want to consider visiting the Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary, a mangrove forest turned wetland that houses a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Whether it’s a modern, historic or natural city you are planning to visit, you’ll find it all in Malaysia.
